The word senior has been used in the English language since the mid-14th century to describe an older person or a person of authority, but it wasn’t used to indicate fourth-year students until the 17th century. This is when students are considered upperclassmen and should begin thinking about post-secondary options. The designation of junior dates way back to the 13th century, where it was first used to describe someone younger than another. The typical age for this grade is 15 to 16 years of age. Usage of the word sophomore dates to the 1650s where it was used to describe university students who were in their second year of study. You might take offense to being considered a “wise fool” but remember: as a teenager, you still have a lot to learn and that’s okay! It is believed that the word sophomore was derived from two Greek terms: Sophos, meaning “wise,” and Moros meaning “foolish”. Most teenagers start the 9th grade at 14 years of age, turning 15 before the end of the year. Today, it’s used to denote students entering their first year of high school. High School Years in Order Year One: Freshman (9th Grade).Academics is ok and there are some good, motivated teachers but a lot are retiring and it seems like we're in a period of a lot of new teachers still trying to get their routines down. It does not seem like there's a whole lot this school has to offer. AP, IB, Honors classes, and ROP is slim pickings also and just this summer, at least 4 off-base schools had the opportunity to participate in a mini-test pilot training program which Desert was not. Great!! Maybe the high school can have similar opportunities. Branch finally has what appears to be a decent Robotics team and a budding garden. Robotics, Lego, Rocket and similar clubs have been attempted but it seems like there's such a lack of student participation or drive, esp. I'm disappointed that this does not seem to be the case. It seems like being a school on an Air Force base that also has NASA on it, the kids would have opportunities available to them that outside schools don't. There aren't as many after school clubs or activities as we've had at previous schools because the school is small, but if there is something available that your kids are interested in trying, they are almost guaranteed to get a spot on the team, activity, or club which might not be possible at a larger school. Between the Honors and AP courses and the fact that students are able to attend college courses through the school's partnership with Cerro Coso Commnity College and get both high school and college credit, there is no reason a student should go unchallenged. If you work on base (even with no military affiliation) you are eligible to send your children to Desert (all you have to do is show proof of working on base) which is very convenient for being able to still attend school functions when the base is so far away from surrounding cities. The school is a lot safer and more academically challenging than other schools in the nearby area and my children have had no issues with bullying. The current leadership communicates with parents via phone or email quickly about anything that arises on campus. My children now attend the junior high and have had a great first year.
